Walton County Outdoor Burn Ban Now in Effect

The ban lasts through Sept. 30.

  • May 4, 2013
Walton County residents are reminded that the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s annual ban on outdoor burning is now in effect.

The annual ban, which runs from May 1 through Sept. 30, is put into effect due to health concerns associated with pollutants created by outdoor burning — the smoke can negatively impact air quality during hot summer months by contributing to high ozone levels.

The open burn ban prohibits residents and businesses from burning yard debris or land clearing debris. You can get the full list of what the burn ban laws are from the Walton County Fire and Rescue website.

SkyDiving in Monroe

Vince Dooley to Skydive with Son and Grandson for Extra Special People

The former UGA football coach and athletic director is participating in the third annual Jump, Fly, Be Different next month in Monroe.

  • May 3, 2013

Former UGA football coach Vince Dooley will be the keynote speaker at the Kennesaw Business Association luncheon on Sept. 13.

Look to the skies of Monroe next month and you’ll see a University of Georgia legend among dozens who’ll be leaping from airplanes to raise money for Watkinsville’s Extra Special People.

Vince Dooley will be taking the plunge alongside his grandson, Matthew, and his son, Daniel, Good Day Atlanta reports.

Matthew has cerebral palsy and does everything with the aid of a wheelchair, but he chose to mark his 18th birthday by skydiving, Oconee Patch blogger Leslie Hale wrote in a post about last year’s event.  He single-handedly raised $3,500 out of the $21,000 collected. During summer camp, Matthew was presented with a plaque displaying his skydiving photo alongside a sketch of his superhero persona.

The fundraiser was to take place on Saturday, May 4, but has been rescheduled for June 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Skydive Monroe at the Monroe-Walton Airport. An announcement on the date change reads:

“ESP is committed to the community and it’s supporters through successful events which includes the safety of our jumpers and attendees. Skydive Monroe has projected that both the cloud height and the wind speed are not acceptable conditions for skydiving.”

All are invited to cheer on the jumpers while enjoying free music and other activities. Food will also be for sale.

Gas Discounts at Walmart

Walmart in Loganville and Monroe Offering Discounts on Gas

The retailer’s discount, available throughout Georgia, is as high as 15 cents a gallon.

  • April 2, 2013

Reportedly seeking to boost sales, Walmart is offering discounts on gasoline that are as much as 15 cents per gallon. And the offer is good at the Loganville and Monroe, Ga. outlets.

The retailer announced Monday a Great Gas Rollback program. Walmart customers using a Walmart gift card will receive a 10 cent per gallon discount; customers who use a Walmart MoneyCard or Walmart Credit Card will save 15 cents per gallon on their fuel purchase. The offer is good at the Murphy USA gas outlets at the participating Walmart stores.

Based on Georgiagasprices.com on Tuesday, that would yield a price as low as $3.23 per gallon.

Georgia is one of 21 states in which the Walmart offer is good.
